Camp Gifford is the second largest of six WPA cantonments housing the WPA clearing crews on the upper Columbia river and adjacent waters of tributary streams. This recently completed camp now accommodates 510 of the 2200 WPA workers on the big Grand Coulee dam reservoir clearing project. By next summer, this region will be entirely cleared, the camp removed and the Grand Coulee reservoir will have permanently inundated the area, according to scheduled plans. It is near the old town of Gifford. Originally well back from the river, rising water has made it a lakeside camp.

Photo measures 9.25 x 7 inches.

Photo is dated 08-11-1940.
