1974 Press Photo Machu Picchu citadel of the ancient Inca empire - spa52603

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description

Machu Picchu meaning old mountain perches 6,750 feet above sea level amid the peaks of the Peruvian Andes. The citadel, one of the most complete remnants of the ancient Inca empire, was abandoned four centuries ago and remained undisturbed until 1911. Now, with the present onslaught of eager tourists, there are days when Machu Picchu looks more like an ant hill, even though it is still accessible only by a narrow gauge railroad and a minibus ride over a winding dirt road. Photo measures 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-30-1974.
