Amid flying sparks, Doug Magendanz shows workers how to fashion a handmade spike from a steel rod. The blacksmiting workshop was part of the Tollgate shelter project in the Mount Hood National Forest east of Rhododendron. At right: Using a chainsaw, Dale Swee demonstrates timbershaping techniques for workers who restored and historic Tollgate shelter near Rhododendron.
