1981 Press Photo Drawing of Russian Backfire, bomber jet - mjb90010

Description
Washington: The Defense Department September 29th released this drawing of the Soviet Tupoley "Backfire" bomber, which it says is capable of carrying free-fall bombs on air-to-surface missiles. According to the Pentagon, 35 new "Backfires" are being built each year. The sketch is contained in an elaborate Pentagon report, "Soviet Military Power." At a news conference, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger denied that the report was being released at this time to strengthen the administration's arguments in the Defense budget debate.
