Eastern Nigeria Break away.: Eastern Nigeria today broke away from the seven-year-old Nigerian Federation and proclaimed itself the sovereign independent republic of Biafra. The announcement of the break same after a weekend of mounting tension with a session of the region and its 14 million people apparently imminent. In a statem ent in Enugu, the Eastern Government warned of possible "bloody conflict" in Nigeria. For months the Eastern Region had talked of secession but, always, at the last moment, the regional governor, LT. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu, drew back from the fateful step. Photo shows Lt.
