Caption: Ira Jayne, Top Jurist, Dies at 78 Retiree Suffers Heart Attack Retired Circuit Judge Ira Waite Jayne--a nationally known judicial reformer, a friend to children and dean of Wayne County's elder statesmen--died early Sunday 78. Judge Jayne suffered a heart attack and died at 1:15 a.m. at his residence at 1416 W. chicago, shortly after he had retired for the evening. He had served on the Circuit bench 37 years, longer than any man in the County's history, and as executive judge of the 18-member court for 27 years. He retired, reluctantly in December, 1856.
