1976 Press Photo shopping center, Lakeside, Fairlane

Description
Caption: New photo file, Fairlane Town Center (Dearborn), Armend P, Lakeside, Fairlane: Advancing The Art Of the Mall, Struck by the overwhelming enormity of it, I stood there with my head crooked back, half expecting to see a rain cloud or flock of birds blow by. I had just entered the almost-finished Lakeside Center in Sterling Heights, which, together with its companion in Dearborn, Fairlane Towne Center, opens to the public March 2 after four years in the works. Both are products of the Southfield-based Taubman Co. It's centers like these that have made shopping America's most popular in-door sport. I must admit that shopping centers to me have always seemed only to be economic interruptions in the sweep of nature's landscape, swaddled in concrete, esthetically brittle.
