Caption: A SMILE AND A FIRM FACE BELYING HIS 72 YEARS AND MORE THAN 25 YEARS AS A STATESMAN OF HIS COUNTRY, PRIME MINISTER JAN CHRISTAAN SMUTS, OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA, LEAVES SOUTH AFRICA HOUSE FOR DOWNING STREET, LONDON, OCT 14. SEVEN DAYS LATER HE SPOKE TO MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH HOUSES OF LORDS AND COMMONS AND PREDICTED THE DAWN OF AN ALLIED OFFENSE. HIS OCT 21 SPEECH, TO WHICH HE PAID TRIBUTE TO BOTH LLOYD GEORGE AND PRIMER MINISTER WINSTON CHURCHILL, MENTIONED THE "BLEEDING TO DEATH IN RUSSIA" OF NAZI ARMIES, THE GROWING POWER OF THE ALLIED NATIONS, THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE BRITISH IN THE WAR DESPITE SETBACKS, AND THE HOPE THAT PERFECTION OF LEAGUE OF NATION IDEALS, WHICH HE HIMSELF HELPED GREATLY TO FORM, MIGHT BE CONTINUED AND EXTENDED "FOR THE COMMON JUSTICE AND FAIR PLAY FOR ALL.".
