Description
The Swiss navy may be a joke, but Montana has a real shipyard, where work is under way on the first of four giant dredges which will pump 90 million cubic feet of material into the largest earth-fill dam in the world. The 4-mile wide barrier, a public works flood control project, will be thrown across the Missouri near the site o old Fort Peck. The dredge hulls are 170 feet long, 140 feet wide and 8 feet deep. Each will be equipped with two 28-inch pumps, driven by 3,500 horsepower motors. They will move 3,000 cubic yards of earth an hour. The dam will cost $72,000,000 and require 5 years to build.
