Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The navigation lock of the John Day Dam on the Columbia River is rapidly taking form as the construction work behind the north shore cofferdam proceeds on schedule. According to the Walla Walla District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the 19 1/2 spillway bays, nonoverflow section and navigation lock which make up the north shore construction work under $million contract, held by Montag-Halvorson-McLaughlin & Associates was 86 per cent complete as of Sept. 1. With completion of the north shore phase, a similar cofferdam will be extended out from the south shore and the flow of the Columbia diverted through the spillway bays while construction work is carried on for the south shore powerhouse.

Photo measures 9.5 x 7.75 inches.
