1930 Press Photo Ruined Capitol Building in Washington caused by fire

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The cause of the fire which threatened for a time to do serious damage to the historic Capitol building in Washington remained in doubt. After an investigation David Lynn, architect of the building, reached the conclusion that the blaze was started by a lighted cigar or cigarette butt dropped inadvertently in the studio room under the roof or from spontaneous combustion in some of the painting materials used there. Photo shows a day scene of the interior of the Capitol where the fire broke out, with the model of the Capitol shown in background.

Photo measures 10 x 7 inches.

Photo is dated 1-5-1930.
