Description
The Hixon House in La Crosse, built in 1857 by Gideon C. Hixon, is maintained virtually as it appeared at the turn of the century. Hixon, a banker who served several terms in the Legislature, died in 1892. The 15 rooms house has five fireplaces and several walls are covered with embossed Italian velvet or decorated with hand painted canvas. Ornately carved wood-work was used int the parlor. The family wash-house,o or laundry is now used for the La Crosse County Historical Society museum.
