Twelve years have passed since Chicken George (Avon Long) brought his family to the town of Henning, Tennessee as the ABC Television Network presents the opening episode of "Roots: The Next Generations," Sunday, February 18 at 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. Stage, Screen star Avon Long is dead at 73. Actor Avon Long, who starred in the role of Sportin' Life In George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," died of cancer Wednesday. He was 73. Long appeared in dozens of Broadway plays, Including 1942's "Porgy and Bess," "Bubblin' Brown Sugar" and "Kiss Me Kate." He was cominated for a Tony in Broadway's "Don't Play Us Cheap" in 1971. His last performance was New Year's Eve in Germany in "Brown Sugar." His films included "Trading Places," "Harry and Tonto," "The Sting," and "Finnian's Rainbow." In television's "Roots II," Long portrayed Chicken George.
