Thirty-Ninth Regular Session Of The General Assembly: The United Nations General Assembly, which commenced its 39th Regular Session on the afternoon of 18 September, elected as its President Paul J.F. Lusaka, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. As proclaimed by the Assembly in 1981, the International Day of Peace was observed on the opening day of the new Session. The United Nations now has 159 Member States. Six other States and thirteen organizations have Observer status. A view of the General Assembly today as it voted on Denmark's proposal to take no action on an amendment proposed by Iran which would have rejected the credentials of Israel. At the presiding table are (left to right) Secretary-General Javier Perez De Cuellar; General Assembly President Paul J.P. Lubaka; and William B. Ruffum. Under-Secretary-General for Political and General Assembly Affairs.
