Relics of The Great Blaze of 1861 On Show The Great Tooley-street fire - London's worst since the havoc of 1666- caused Pound 2 million worth of damage and finally buried the idea that a city could be defended by private fire brigades. Five years later, in 1866, the London Fire Brigade was formed. To mark the centenary of the turning point, an exhibition has been staged at the Royal Exchange. Photo Shows:- Eighty-one-year-old Dave Jacobs, driver of a manual fire engine of the type used 100 years ago. The engine was driven from Tooley-street to the exhibition.
