1974 Press Photo Shirley Balashoff, 17, smiles after winning swim meet

Shirley Balashoff, 17, Fountain Valley, California and Tim Shaw, 16, Long Beach, California, pose shyly together after each broke the 400 meter free style World Record here last night. Miss Balashoff set her record of 4:15.77 first and Shaw followed immediately with a time of 3 minutes 54.60 seconds to break the record for the second time in the same day on the opening day of the Amateur Athletic Union National Swimming championships.
