1979 Press Photo Aerial view of nearly completed Tellico Dam on Tennessee River

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description

The nearly-completed Tellico Dam joins an earthen embankment on the Little Tennessee River on which they were intended to form a reservoir. The snail darter, for whose sake the project has been halted, can't swim up through the sluice gates to spawn, either the concrete dam has to be destroyed or a channel has to be cut through the adjoining earthen dam if the little fish is to have a chance to survive in its only known habitat. Photo measures 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Photo is dated 3-15-1979.
