Description
Workers blasted the peak off a cliff Tuesday at Milepost 53 about 10 miles west of Hood River on Interstate, 84, at left, then cleaned away the resulting rock debris, above. The ongoing project is aimed at preventing further rock slides in the area, where two children were killed last fall when falling rock struck the car in which they were riding. The $500,00 project calls for blasting two rock benches above the freeway, first removing any loose rock that might be likely to fall on the roadway. The blasting also is aimed at removing crumpling weathered rock, excavating back to more stable strata. Elte Corp. of Boring is project contractor; work is to be completed in late October.
