Entries in The Oregonian-James Beard Cookbook Recipe Contest are now in the hands of the eight local culinary experts who will decide the winners in separate categories of the competition. Preliminary screening of the recipes to determine eligibility of the entrants revealed that of the nearly 4,000 entries, about nine per cent came from male cooks. The greatest number of entries, from both men and women, were in either the meat, poultry and main dish or the dessert and candy division of the contest.
