Theatre in which thousand died in earthquake: Chillan, chila. there were 1000 persons in the municipal theatre in chillan, enjoying an american film when the disastrous earthquake struck. All were buried in the debris when the building fell. When this Photograph of the ruins was made only a few bodies had been recovered and many more were buried under the heavy walls. It is estimated that 10,000 died in chillan alone as a result of the terrific temblor which struck this south american country on the western slopes of the lofty andes.
