John James, the Shropshire man emerged for the first time to contact authorities. He carried his shotgun under his arm. James walked six paces to an outhouse wall and collected a loaf of bread, a tin of luncheon meat, and water left by Mr. Tom Hadlington, his brother-in-law. It is now six days since James barricaded himself in the cottage with his wife Joyce and four young children.
