So the roadway had to go under the graveyard. it stands on stilts; Tokyo road constructors came to a dead stop when they came to a 100 year old cemetery at Yoyogi which lay in their path near the Olympic Stadium. To remove the graves to another site would not only be extremely expensive and time wasting - but would meet with much opposition from relatives of persons buried there as well as the owners of the ground and the nearby Temple. If they bridged the cemetery it would be plunged into darkness causing the grass and the flowers to die. The constructors finally decided to tunnel beneath the graveyard and the road continued onwards to join the by pass. Photo Shows The site of the graveyard and the underpass which solved the problem.
