Mr. Ben Robinson measures the candles before cutting them. They have to be exactly 48 inches in length and they burn one inch per hour. Making The Candles for the Coronation ceremony: The candles which will stand on the alter in Westminster Abbey during the Coronation Ceremony are now being made by Charles Farris Ltd., of Hounslow who have been making candles since 1845. Hand casting the candles is Mr. Benjamin Robinson who has made candles for most of the Royal occasion over the past 28 years he has been with the firm. Included among these events have been the lying is State of King George V, Ring George VI and Queen Mary, the coronation of King George Vi and the weddings of princess Elizabeth to the Duke of Edinburgh and of the late duke of Kent to princess Marina, The coronation candles are 48 inches long and weigh 51bs each. They burn at the Crete of one inch per honor and on contraction Day will be alight for 12 hours. The ends are returned to Charles Farris and by tradition re malted down, but on this occasion two of the candle ends are being presented to the Tallow chandlers company for framing and keeping in their Hall in memory of the occasion.
