Caption: Merchant Isadore Winkelman dies at 77by SUSAN MORSEFree Press Staff WriterIsadore Winkeman, 77, the dynamic, hard-nosed business pioneer who co-founded the Detroit-based women's clothing chain Winkelman Stores Inc.m died Saturday at Sinai Hospital in Detroit after a long illness.A self-made man called the "last of his breed" by a colleague, Mr. Winkelman - or I.W., as he was known - strove to give customers what he called in 1928,".. elegance and personalized service .. at minimum cost." For years he fought a move to the now prevalant self-service shopping. His formula of high fashion and top service met with success. By the mid- 1960s, Mrs. Winkelman had become president of the Midwest's then largest chain of women's fashion stores. Before his death, he could look with pride to a tri-state network of 87 stores in the family-run business. One of his competitors and admirers was Joseph L. Hudson Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the J.L Hudosn Co.
