Powerful, 130-foot-tall Titan 3C rocket blasts away from Cape Kennedy to drill the western world's largest communications spacecraft toward a stationary orbit 22,300 miles over the Pacific, west of South America. Called TACCOMSAT for Tactical Communications Satellite, the 1,600 pound payload was a forerunner of a satellite network that could link small military units on the front lines at sea and in aircraft.
