1965 Press Photo Roland Elephant Seal Detroit Zoo Death

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: Roland, a two-year-old baby elephant seal at the Detroit Zoo has died of unexplained causes. Roland was found dead in the pool he shared with sea lions and other seals Tuesday, June 22, 1967. He had appeared healthy at the noon feeding that day. Michigan State University vets conducted an autopsy but weren't able to find a specific cause of death. Roland was captured in 1965 from the only remaining northern elephant seal colony in the world, on the Mexican controlled reserve on Guadalupe Island off of the coast of Lower California. The reserve was established in 1911 after elephant seals were nearly wiped out by whalers. Roland would have reached maturity in 8 years.
